Kumamoto City Zoological and Botanical Gardens

The combination of a zoo and botanical garden is a rarity in Japan. In the zoo, you can find not only popular animals like elephants, monkeys, giraffes, but also very unique animals including a golden monkey that was used as the model for "Songoku,"the hero in the famous Chinese novel entitled "Saiyuki." You can also enjoy ferris wheel and roller coaster rides, as well as other attractions in the amusement park located within the zoo grounds. In the botanical garden, there is a large greenhouse where you can observe a variety of tropical plants. The area around the outside of the garden is very relaxing and features seasonal flowers such as rape blossoms and cosmos.
