Former Residence of Koizumi Yakumo

The Greek-born writer, Lafcadio Hearn (known as Koizumi Yakumo in Japan), came to Kumamoto to teach English at Goko (currently Kumamoto University) in 1891. During his first year here, he completed one of many literary works. This house was rebuilt in 1995 and contains some panels which introduce his achievements and works. The household Shinto alter that Yakumo prayed at every morning is also preserved.
