In the Middle Ages, a great general in the Sengoku Era, Kiyomasa Kato, built Kumamoto Castle. Then, Hosokawa, who had taken the place of Kato, ruled the political scene for 200 years. During the Meiji Restoration, a contemporary thinker, Shonan Yokoi, appeared and played a key role in the modernization of Japan. After the restoration, Kumamoto became the stage of the Satsuma Rebellion. Kumamoto established its reputation as a place favored by warriors and literatures since ancient days. One famous Japanese swordsman in the Middle age, Musashi Miyamoto, chose Kumamoto as a base for his life, and the author of modern literature, Soseki Natsume, composed many masterpieces based on his experience in Kumamoto.
